With Monsoon Arrive a New Set of Health Woes: Doctors at Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon Report Rise in Viral, Bacterial Infections

Paras Logo

Gurgaon, July 2015: The monsoon season is a time for some much-needed relief from the scorching hot summer months, but it is also a time when diseases such as dengue, malaria, conjunctivitis, allergies, gastrointestinal infections and other bacterial and fungal infestations report a rise.

With patients in Gurgaon already reporting a spurt in infections, doctors at Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon are advising people to adopt preventive measures.

“It is just a few days into monsoon and we are already receiving an increasing number of patients (40-50 patients a day) reporting gastrointestinal, respiratory, acute febrile illness as well as eye infections. Poor sanitation, contamination of food and water become more prominent during the season. While common cold and viral fevers are quite common, people are also exposed to several intestinal infections leading to Gastroenteritis, Typhoid and Hepatitis due to intake of unhygienic and infected food and water. Dengue and Malaria are another scourge that rears its head every year during this season. So, we always suggest our patients to keep a watch on health, food & water hygiene & maintain high level of suspicion of the diseases discussed above and to report to doctor if the symptoms arise. In this season one should avoid eating on roadside joints” says Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Consultant, Internal Medicine.

The best way to prevent from being infected is to have a good knowledge about the cause and spread of the diseases that are common during the monsoon. As only then, you can chalk out the measures to prevent yourself from these diseases. Let’s take a look at the prevalent diseases:

Dengue, malaria, chikungunya

Dengue and chikungunya are acute viral infections transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. The common symptoms of the diseases are fever; sever body aches, joint pain and rash. Both are viral infection. Aedes mosquito breeds in clean water (artificial water-filled container habitats).                       Malaria is caused by female Anopheles mosquito that breeds in the fresh- or salt-water marshes, mangrove swamps, rice fields, grassy ditches, the edges of streams and rivers, and small, temporary rain pools. Malaria is characterized by symptoms such as high fever at regular intervals with shivering, muscle pain, headache and weakness. All the three diseases discussed above can be prevented by preventing mosquito breeding, keeping the surroundings clean and dry; wearing full length clothes; using coils and repellants even during the daytime to keep mosquitoes at bay.

Diarrhea and cholera

Spread by contaminated consumption of foods and water and both spread due to poor hygienic conditions. Increased frequency of watery stools leading to dehydration is the hall mark of diarrhea & Cholera. Adequate intake of fluids with ORS is the key to prevent dehydration & renal failure which may follow loose stools. After every loose stool one should take at least 300 ml of ORS solution. If one is not able to take fluids then one should report to hospital. Both the diseases can be prevented by staying alert on the hygiene quotient.

Typhoid and Jaundice and Gastroenteritis

Spread due to consumption of contaminated water or food, Typhoid incidence increases during monsoon. Poor sanitation and lack of hygiene favors the growth of typhoid bacteria other viruses which cause infection of liver (Hepatitis). High grade fever, sever headache, weakness, pain are common symptoms of typhoid, while symptoms like sever weakness, decreased appetite ,yellow urine and eyes, vomiting and liver dysfunction indicates Jaundice. Avoiding consumption of street-side food or water and drinking lots of healthy fluid can help avoid Typhoid & Jaundice both. If symptoms arise prompt medical consultation can prevent many complications.

After all Monsoon is not that gloomy, one can & should enjoy rains albeit with precautions as mentioned above. Have a pleasant & disease free Monsoon.

A recent analysis of the sporting gun market by Bonhams, one of the major players in this field, shows that the cult of celebrity has reached the gun world. Guns with VIP owners achieve significantly higher prices.

Patrick Hawes, Head of Sporting Guns at Bonhams, who holds world records for a variety of weapons sold, says: “Once you have factored in the key aspects of gun buying at auction – quality, condition, rarity – you then find that it’s the weapon’s previous owners that add lustre to its provenance and price. For example anything previously owned by an Indian Maharajah or one of the British Royal family or well-known professional hunters will have an automatic supplement in perceived value and as often as not a few zeroes added to the price when sold.”

Guns with VIP status sold by Bonhams Sporting Guns Department include: James Bond author, Ian Fleming’s colt Python .357 magnum revolver; the King of Romania’s Purdey; the Duke of  Riansares’ Purdey; Field Marshall Sir Francis Wogan Festings’s Boss Hammer gun; Prince Victor Duleep Singh’s Purdey; Prince Frederick Duleep Singh’s Purdey; the Holland & Holland owned by African white hunter explorer Frederick Selous; most famous professional white hunter, Philip Percival’s  pair of rifles by J. Lang: and the most famous elephant hunter James Sutherland whose .577 ‘heavy’ Westley Richards rifle bought by him in 1906, sold for an astonishing £68,000.

Born in Scotland, Sutherland emigrated to Cape Town in 1896. He hunted extensively in Mozambique, Tanzania, Uganda, the Belgian Congo and Malawi, and it is estimated that he shot a total of 1,200 bull elephants alone in his career. Sutherland is thought by many to be one of the most famous elephant hunters of his time, and his book, The Adventures of an Elephant Hunter, published in 1912, has come to be regarded as one of the best elephant hunting titles ever, rivalling Walter Bell’s publications.

Another good example of a VIP gun is evident in the pair of shotguns once owned by Colonel William Stirling one of the founders of the modern SAS which were estimated to sell for £18,000 to £25,000 but in fact sold for £43,000. They are described as a pair of 12-bore self-opening sidelock ejector guns by J. Purdey & Sons built for Colonel W. Stirling. The makers have kindly confirmed that the guns were completed in 1949 for Colonel W. Stirling, and were rebarrelled by the makers in 1975. They have remained in the same family since new.

Lieutenant-Colonel William Joseph Stirling of Keir (1911-1983) William Stirling was the eldest son of Brigadier General Archibald Stirling of Kier, and was educated at Ampleforth College and Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating in 1932. He joined the Scots Guards, and during the Second World War commanded 62 Commando before forming 2 Special Air Service in May 1943 in Philippeville, Algeria, four months after the capture of his brother David in Tunisia. 2 SAS saw service in both Sicily and Italy before returning to Britain in 1944, where the two SAS regiments were joined with two French and one Belgian unit to form the SAS Brigade of the Army Air Corps which was then deployed during the Normandy invasion, working behind the lines up until the end of the war, when they were disbanded. Stirling later became Honorary Colonel of the Scots Guards

A new best quality gun by Purdey, Holland and Holland or Boss could set you back £100,000 or more today, so it is worth looking for a second hand gun at auction, and Bonhams twice yearly sales in Knightsbridge always offers a good selection. At these sales a good quality double-barrelled shotgun can be bought for a fraction of this.

Proof of the interest in these sales is seen by the record prices achieved over the past decade. For example:

* A fine pair of Kelly engraved 12 bore single trigger self- opening sidelock ejector guns by J. Purdey & Son sold for £79,000

*A fine .470 sidelock ejector rifle by Rigby sold for £45,000

*A fine and rare 12 bore sidelock hammer ejector gun by Boss & Co sold for £27,500

* A fine 12 bore sidelock hammer gun by J. Purdey & Son sold for £20,000

Bonhams next sale of Sporting Guns takes place on December 2nd in the Knightsbridge saleroom. The Sporting Gun department at Bonhams Knightsbridge has grown significantly in recent years to become one of the global leaders in this specialist field.

The sales, held three times a year at the company’s Montpelier Street salerooms include a fine and varied selection of best quality British and European shotguns and rifles – including the best makers such as Holland & Holland, Purdey, Boss, Woodward, Lebeau-Courally, Francotte, Bosis and numerous others. A variety of accessories including gun cases, cartridge-magazines, cartridge display boards and books are also included in these sales. The market in this specialist area remains very buoyant and record prices have been frequently achieved in recent years.

There are a number of Valuation Days in which you will receive a free estimate on the value of your gun.

7 Loan Tips for First Time Home Buyers

Most men and women looking for a first time home loan are bogged down by multiple questions and confusions. Whether it is the right time, whether the property is suitable, which bank to seek loan from, etc… Yet, there are others who are almost cavalier when sealing a home loan deal and purchasing a property, and end up realizing later the mistake they made by not doing their homework well.

One needs to be very careful when you decide to take the home plunge, because buying a house is much more than securing a home loan. When you decide on buying a home, make sure you know the long-term implications of your move and your capacity to make repayments.

Here are a set of beginner’s tips for people looking for a first time home buy:

1. Evaluate your monthly cash flow and assess ways to save more

Before you decide what you can afford and invest in, you need to have your basic calculations right. Make sure you list out your income and expenditure details regularly for at least 3-4 months to assess some basic factors such as what extra expenditure you can cut, how much money you can save, and how large repayment installments you can afford. This is very basic calculation which an individual must be able to do before going for a house loan. It will not only make your accounts clear in your mind but also make it easier to plan your expenses well. Think about ways to save more cash, cut your superfluous expenses. Your rented apartment may be bigger than what you need right now, consider moving into a smaller apartment to save on rent. Move in with your parents for a year or two, if possible. Only when you are convinced that you are saving enough and to the best of your potential should you move ahead with a house and loan search.

2. Select what you can really afford

Now that you have a fair understanding of your buying capability, make an assessment of what you can afford. Do not take impetuous decisions while selecting property. Never select a house that will put more financial burden on you than you can carry in your present circumstances. Do not indulge in wishful thinking and assume promotions and appraisals down the years will help you tide in the payments. Apart from affordability, also take into account factors like safety, location, public transport accessibility, among other conveniences. Also factor in the cost potential of the property, whether it promises to surge in value with time.

3. Save for down payment and seek help if needed

It is advisable to save as much you can to make a down payment for the purchase. The more you can pay without a bank loan help, the better it would be for you. Apart from saving some money, sell some assets if needed; or seek help from parents or other willing family members for making a substantial down payment. You won’t need to pay interest back to your family, just the principal some. The lesser loan you take from the bank, the shorter will be the payment course and the lesser the interest payment. The larger the down payment you make, the better it is for you because it reduces the remaining amount to be paid over the years.

4. Check with multiple banks

Do your homework well. Do not just plunge into a deal with the first bank you speak to. Make sure you go around and check the different deals different banks are offering. Then opt for the best deal available. Sometimes people hurry into a deal with a bank and realize later that another bank could have made a better and more profitable deal.

5. Go for consolidation of loan

Often when many people decide to buy a home, they are already having another running loan or liability. For example an auto loan which would now run parallel to the home loan. In such circumstances, consolidation of loans is a good option. Nobody likes to pay two EMIs simultaneously; a loan consolidation reduces the amount payable per month resulting in a single monthly payment instead of multiple payments. By consolidating two simultaneously running loans, one would not only reduce the installments per month but also reduce the rate of interest as compared to what one would be paying on multiple repayments.

6. Have at least 3 months payments in your account

When you activate a loan, you must not be living from paycheck to paycheck. Make sure you have some cushion money in your account to fall back upon. You should have at last three months of payment equivalent money in your account even after making the down payment.

7. Have contingency funds:

Some people buy a house, and do not immediately realize the liabilities it will bring. They end up forfeiting the buy, and this harms their credit score. Unforeseen events and exigencies can happen to anybody. One needs to be very careful and always have a Plan B. Make sure there is a contingency fund such as an FD that can be encashed on emergency or a PPF fund that can be relied upon in case an unfortunate incident like a pink slip happens. These emergency funds can come in the form of life insurance deposits, FDs, or mutual funds that you have invested in.

Bengaluru, 27th July, 2015: 53 countries across the world today celebrate the world head neck cancer day in association with international Federation of Head and Neck Oncologic Societies (IFHNOS) and the American Head and Neck Society (AHNS) on  July 27th to help in promoting awareness and prevention of these cancers.

Speaking on occasion Shri U .T Khader, Honourable Minister for Health and Family welfare, Govt of Karnataka said “ Karnataka sees nearly 50,000 New cases of Cancer each year. and the total number of cancer cases at given time (prevalence) 1,37,889. The national cancer registry program estimates that one in 12 people in our state may be vulnerable to develop cancer.Cancer is a today becoming a growing concern in the society. Hence in order to facilitate better planning of treatment, prevention policies and research it is important to truly understand the patterns of cancer in grass root level in districts and villages. In order to achieve this goal towards cancer control Karnataka takes a lead to make cancer as a notifiable disease. By this notification, Karnataka becomes the third state in country to have notified cancer. We have laid an elaborate plan out to implement this notification and we are sure to be showcased as a model to other states and asian countries. Almost 50% of developed nations have incorporated cancer to be a notifiable disease recognizing the need to address the growing burden of cancer on health and economy. It is high time Govt of India thinks in these lines. We want to be the torchbearers for such initiatives which have strong public health impact.

Tobacco contributes to nearly 40-50% of the cancers. On this occasion, Home Minister K.J.George along with Shri U.T.Khader Launched the software to monitor COTPA implementation’.  The home department with the help of the National Informatics Centre (NIC) Karnataka state unit has developed this state of the art software to monitor COTPA implementation by various departments throughout the state of Karnataka.

Speaking on the occasion Home Minister Shri K.J.George said “Cancer is a growing health concern internationally as well as in India and Karnataka. One of the important known preventable causes of cancer is ‘tobacco use’. In India we have a strong law to control tobacco use which is the Cigarettes and Other tobacco products Act of 2003 (COTPA).  It gives me immense pleasure to see that Karnataka is considered as one of the role models in implementation of this law. The home department alongwith several other departments is very effectively implementing this law. Till date approximately 2.4 lakh individuals’ violations have been registered by the Home department alone in enforcing COTPA.

One of the reasons for success in implementation is the regular reporting and reviewing. Since many departments are also implementing COTPA in their jurisdiction it is important to have a centralized reporting system. The National Informatics Centre (NIC) Karnataka state unit has provided us with such a state of the art, first of its kind globally focused on tobacco control This website aims to institutionalize reporting and review mechanisms and encourage interlinking among the various departments working on tobacco control in the state. We are hopeful that by better implementation of the law we will be able to protect the people of Karnataka especially the youth who are our future from this deadly addictive substance called tobacco.
